Enlightening Early Penguins on Open Source
In a little over a week, I’ll be speaking at The Ohio LinuxFest in Columbus, OH. This is a return to speaking to the Linux crew, which makes me excited as my first user group presentation 14 years ago was at a Linux users group. I’m especially excited to have the opportunity to enlighten Early Penguins by shattering some of the myths behind the open source realm and encourage them to explore various open source projects. These are some of the things to look forward to:
- Mentioning companies that are using open source products
- Delving into some history behind the open source world
- Shattering myths such as “You have to have a beard to be successful in the open source community.” and “Open source is a fringe movement.”
- Describing the benefits to using open source solutions
The open source world has always intrigued me. As I finished my slide deck today, I smiled at realizing that it really has grown from the “SourceForge is the place to download cool open source stuff” mentality. It isn’t just SourceForge anymore, and I’ll mention many of the others that are out there. It’s been great watching the open source realm grow – both in involvement and in getting past certain stereotypes. I look forward to sharing these things in my “Keeping an Open Mind on Open Source” talk on Friday, September 13, at 1pm at The Ohio LinuxFest! I hope to see you there!
